The teen pop star and Wizards of Waverly Place star has been the center of much discussion about whether the willowy star suffers from an eating disorder. On the surface, Selena Gomez has it all. She’s beautiful, has a promising career and is dating none other than teen heartthrob Justin Bieber. Gomez was doing an interview on the Tonight Show and she complained about headaches and nausea. Gossip writers hurried to speculate that the teen star might be pregnant. She wasn’t. She was informed by doctors that she had extremely low iron levels, was suffering from exhaustion and needed to change her diet to be more healthy.
What happens when you don’t have enough iron in your body is that it can lead to an iron deficiency called anemia. Symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, headache, coldness in hands and feet, pale skin and even chest pains according to the National Institutes of Health. A poor diet can, on some occasions, be blamed for anemia. This was Selena’s problem. The issue was not that she wasn’t eating enough, she simply wasn’t eating the right things. Like all girls her age, her problem was junk food. What she should have been eating were meats like chicken and fish or iron fortified breads, cereals, dried fruits, spinach, tofu and dark green leafy vegetables.
Selena has said that she loves everything that is not good for her and can find a way to make healthy food unhealthy. For instance, she had to have her spinach creamed and cheese on her broccoli. She was a huge fan of junk food and ate candy by the bucket. She’s promised herself to curb the junkfood and to take daily vitamins with iron in order to get back on the track to a healthy body.
Giving up junk food can be hard to do. Its fast, easy, cheap and its positively everywhere. It doesn’t give you what you need however, and it can leave you feeling exhausted and bloated. To avoid problems like Selena’s, avoid foods high in high fructose corn syrup or processed fats such as trans fats. Most junk food contains these and they can sap away energy. Selena helped prove that skinny isn’t the same thing as healthy. Her high metabolism helped keep her weight down, but her diet put her in the hospital. Thankfully, Selena Gomez is taking the right steps towards a healthy lifestyle.
